Cow Protection

New Vrindaban is home to the first slaughter-free dairy in both ISKCON and the Western world. Our cow protection program has been in continual operation since spring 1969. ECO-Vrindaban has been serving in this capacity since 1998.

Dairy Cows

ECO-V has a wonderful dairy program. The milk produced by the cows goes to their calves first. The remaining milk is made into many different products including yogurt, butter and ghee by our cowherds. Then these are used daily in the temple kitchen and offered to Sri Sri Radha Vrindaban Chandra and the other Deities.

Oxen

Oxen are trained by our cowherds using positive techniques that build a relationship of trust and respect between the oxen and the cowherd.

Our Herd

Our herd, currently about 70 animals in total, also includes our breeding bulls, calves, retired oxen, and retired cows. Each of our animals is special and our slaughter-free practice ensures that they will all spend their natural lives here on our farm.

Stewardship

ECO-V manages 900 acres of land with 260 acres of pasture for the herd and 150 acres of land for hayfields. Our herd is housed in our four barn facilities that are spread throughout New Vrindaban.

"Krishna by His practical example taught us to give all protection to the cows and that should be the main business of New Vrindaban."
